A lot of people assume Zinkwazi is a Durban beach, and a fair number of searches ask where in Durban it is. It is not in Durban at all. Durban to Zinkwazi is a drive of about an hour up the N2, to a village on the North Coast in KwaDukuza municipality, well past Umhlanga, Ballito and Tinley Manor.
The drive is easy once you know two things: you pay two tolls on the way, and the Zinkwazi exit comes up faster than you expect. Here is the route, the distances and what to pick up before you turn off.
How far is Zinkwazi from Durban?
About an hour by car from central Durban, outside rush hour. By road it is roughly 80km, and in a straight line from the city centre it is about 75km north-east.
Zinkwazi sits in the iLembe district, in KwaDukuza municipality, just north of the Nonoti River mouth, around its own lagoon. KwaDukuza, the town people still call Stanger, is the nearest place with shops and banks, about 15km away in a straight line. Distances in this guide are straight-line from the village centre except where a drive time is given, because the roads wind.
From King Shaka International Airport
The airport is the closer starting point: about 45 minutes and roughly 60km by road, or 48km in a straight line. Turn north onto the N2 out of the airport and stay on it.
If you are flying in, hire a car. There is no practical public transport into Zinkwazi, and getting a ride back out of the village is harder than getting one in.
The rental desks are in the airport terminal. A normal car is fine: the N2 is a dual carriageway all the way, and the roads in the village are tarred, if steep and winding in places.
Tolls between Durban and Zinkwazi
The N2 north of Durban is a toll road, and you pay two plazas on the way to Zinkwazi. From central Durban, the first is oThongathi, which used to be Tongaat, at R15.50 for a car in 2026. From the airport, you pay the King Shaka plaza, at R8.50. Both routes then pass through the Mvoti mainline plaza, at R18.50.
Keep a card handy at both plazas, and note that the tariffs go up most years, so treat these as a guide. Budget about R34 each way from Durban and R27 from the airport.
The route, step by step
Take the N2 north and stay on it past Umhlanga, Ballito and the Tinley Manor turn. Keep going past the KwaDukuza exits and over the Nonoti bridge.
Just after the flyover bridge past the Nonoti, the R245 Zinkwazi exit is on the left. It comes up quickly, and with heavy trucks using the left lane it is easy to miss, so move over early and watch for the sign. Turn right at the stop street at the bottom of the off-ramp, and that road takes you into the village.
There is a moment just before you reach Zinkwazi where the ocean, the cane fields and the forest canopy all open up to your left. That is how you know you are close.
Traffic, roadworks and holiday weekends
The hour from Durban is a normal-day figure. Roadworks on the N2 corridor come and go and can add real time, so check a traffic app before you leave rather than relying on the clock.
On the Friday before a long weekend, and at the start of the December holidays, half of Gauteng and Durban is heading up the same road. Leave early in the morning or after the evening rush, and the drive stays close to the hour. Arriving in daylight is worth planning for: the exit is easier to see, and so is the house number.
Fuel, cash and groceries on the way
There is no supermarket, petrol station or ATM in Zinkwazi, so stop on the way. The Shell garage on the N2 just before the Mvoti toll plaza has ATMs from the main banks. For a full shop, KwaDukuza has the big supermarkets and is about 15 to 20 minutes back down the N2 from the village.
Once you are in, the village's beach café on Glen Drive covers coffee, breakfast and the basics you forgot, from 7am every day.
Distances from Zinkwazi
Straight-line distances from the centre of the village, with the usual drive time where a local knows it.
| From Zinkwazi to | Straight line | Usual drive |
|---|---|---|
| KwaDukuza (Stanger) | 15km | 15 to 20 minutes |
| Prince's Grant Golf Estate | 9km | about 25 minutes |
| Club Med Tinley Manor | 22km | 15 to 20 minutes |
| Ballito | 35km | 30 to 35 minutes |
| King Shaka International Airport | 48km | about 45 minutes |
| Umhlanga | 60km | |
| Durban city centre | 75km | about an hour |
If you are weighing up Zinkwazi versus Ballito as a base, the half-hour between them is the whole difference: Ballito has the malls and the nightlife, and Zinkwazi has the lagoon and the quiet.
Two places on the way are worth knowing before you book: the all-inclusive Club Med Tinley Manor, 15 to 20 minutes south of the village.
Golfers heading for the course at Prince's Grant turn off at the Stanger and Blythedale Beach exit, about 25 minutes from Zinkwazi.
Coming from further away
From Johannesburg and the Highveld, the drive from Johannesburg to Zinkwazi skips Durban entirely by heading for the North Coast on the N2 well before the city.
If you are stopping in Ballito on the way, the turn-offs and parking are set out under getting to Ballito.
For a stop in town, getting to KwaDukuza is the place to start, since the old Stanger streets are easy to get turned around in.
When you arrive
Arrange key collection with your host before you leave home. Finding a house number on a dark, winding road after a long drive is not much fun, and some hosts meet guests at the house.
