Tinley Manor KZN: Blythedale, Darnall and Zinkwazi's Nearest Neighbours

Tinley Manor KZN, Blythedale and Darnall are the three towns closest to Zinkwazi. Guide to beaches, restaurants and the Club Med opening July 2026.

    Published

Tinley Manor, Blythedale and Darnall are not tourist destinations in the conventional sense. They are the residential coastal communities that make up Zinkwazi's immediate neighbourhood: the towns and villages that sit within 20 minutes of the village and define the stretch of Dolphin Coast coastline that Zinkwazi belongs to. Understanding them gives you a better sense of where you are, what is nearby, and what is worth a short drive during your stay.

    Tinley Manor

Tinley Manor sits approximately 15 to 20 minutes south of Zinkwazi on the N2. It is a quiet, residential beach hamlet with a character very similar to Zinkwazi: holiday homes, uncrowded beaches, no commercial strip. The beach itself has a tidal pool that is safe for children and popular for fishing, surfing and kitesurfing. Indigenous coastal forest lines the beachfront, and vervet monkeys are a common enough sight in the trees above the houses.

Tinley Manor is changing. The R2 billion Club Med Beach Resort is currently under construction here, which will bring a large all-inclusive resort to this stretch of coast for the first time. What that means for the area's character in the coming years is an open question. For now, Tinley Manor is still the quiet neighbour it has always been.

The Club Med Tinley Manor article covers what the resort will offer and what it means for the broader Dolphin Coast.

    Blythedale

Blythedale Beach is immediately south of Tinley Manor, accessible from Zinkwazi either by car or, for those with the legs for it, via the long beach walk south from the main beach that runs past Jamie's Beach, along the Nonoti River mouth, through Prince's Grant and all the way to the beachfront. It is a 12 to 13 kilometre walk and Grumpy's Bush and Beach is the reason to finish it.

Grumpy's Beach Bar sits directly on the sand at Blythedale and is one of those places that appears to have no reason to be there and yet makes complete sense once you arrive. Cold drinks, live music on the first Sunday of every month, and a coastal setting that rewards the walk or the drive. The restaurant has direct beach access and is worth building a morning around.

For something very different, Crazy Cow Cafe is a small breakfast spot in the area known locally for its waffles. Crazy Cow Cafe is the kind of place that does not advertise itself particularly well and is better for it.

Beyond the food, Blythedale has 3.2 kilometres of beach, the Umvoti River estuary for kayaking, and the Blythedale Coastal Estate development which includes 300 hectares of coastal forest with hiking and mountain bike trails. Ghost crabs are common on the beach after dark if you have children who want something unusual to look for.

    Darnall

Darnall is not a beach town. It sits approximately 15 minutes inland from Zinkwazi, surrounded by rolling sugarcane fields. It is the agricultural heartland of the North Coast rather than its coastline. The draw for visitors is the Darnall Country Club, which has an 18-hole golf course, swimming pool, and squash and tennis courts. It is the closest golf option to Zinkwazi for those who want a round without the premium pricing of Prince's Grant.

For serious golfers, Prince's Grant Golf Estate is the more prestigious choice: a clifftop course with Indian Ocean views along most of the layout, open to visitors. Confirm green fees and tee time availability directly with Prince's Grant before making the trip. But for an easy game in a low-key setting with no fuss, Darnall Country Club is worth knowing about.

"Darnall is where the sugarcane starts and the coast ends. It is a completely different world from Zinkwazi and fifteen minutes away."

    Getting to each from Zinkwazi

All three are straightforward from Zinkwazi via the N2 heading south toward Ballito. Tinley Manor and Blythedale are coastal. Follow the beach road south after coming off the N2. Darnall is inland. Follow signs from the N2 toward KwaDukuza and then inland through the sugarcane.

Google Maps is reliable for all three. None of the routes require navigating through areas of concern.

For services, groceries, banking and the nearest hospital, KwaDukuza (formerly Stanger) is the practical stop, approximately 15 to 20 minutes from Zinkwazi on the N2 toward Durban. It also has significant Zulu heritage sites connected to King Shaka worth a visit in their own right. KwaDukuza: heritage, shopping and what to do covers it in full.
