    Published

The drive from Johannesburg to Zinkwazi is approximately six hours. That is the honest number, and most people planning the trip already know it. What they want to know is how to make it manageable: where to stop, which route to take, where to fuel up, and what the last section of road looks like. This guide covers all of it.

    The route

    Johannesburg to Durban: the N3

Take the N3 south from Johannesburg toward Durban. The N3 is a toll road. Bring cash or a tag. Toll plazas are regular and the fees add up over the full distance. The route passes through the Midlands, which is worth knowing about for the overnight option below.

The N3 from Johannesburg to Durban is approximately 580km and takes around five hours under normal traffic conditions. Traffic heading south on Friday afternoons and returning north on Sunday evenings can add 30 to 60 minutes through Johannesburg and on the approaches to Durban.

    Durban to Zinkwazi: the N2

From Durban, take the N2 north. Zinkwazi is approximately 80km north of Durban, roughly 45 to 50 minutes on the highway. The R245 Zinkwazi exit comes up after the Nonoti Bridge and arrives quickly. Watch for it in advance, particularly if you are in the left lane behind trucks. A right turn at the stop street takes you into the village.

Total distance from Johannesburg: approximately 660km. Total drive time: approximately six hours in good conditions.

Should you do it in one day?

Most people do. Six hours is manageable as a single day's drive, particularly if you leave Johannesburg early. Departing by 5am puts you at Zinkwazi by late morning, leaving the afternoon for unpacking and the lagoon. Departing at 8am puts you there by 2pm.

The case for an overnight stop is a more relaxed trip for families with young children. The Midlands Meander area, roughly two hours south of Johannesburg on the N3, has good accommodation options and is a logical stopping point. Leaving Johannesburg in the late afternoon, sleeping in the Midlands, and finishing the drive the following morning puts you at Zinkwazi before lunch with no early start required.

    Where to stop and refuel

Toll plazas on the N3 have fuel and food at most stops. Van Reenen's Pass is the most significant landmark on the N3 descent from the Highveld into KwaZulu-Natal. Stop here if you need fuel or a break — the views from the pass are worth a few minutes in any case.

Approaching Zinkwazi: the Shell on the N2 just before the Mvoti Toll Plaza is the last practical fuel stop before the Zinkwazi exit. Fill up here. There is no petrol station in Zinkwazi village. The same stop has ATMs — there are none in the village either.

Shops and services near Zinkwazi BeachKwaDukuza Mall is 15 to 20 minutes south of Zinkwazi on the N2. If you need a full grocery shop, this is the stop to make before turning off the highway. Woolworths, Checkers and Pick n Pay are all in the mall.

    The Zinkwazi exit

The R245 exit for Zinkwazi comes up quickly after the Nonoti Bridge on the N2. It is well signed but not prominent. At highway speed and watching for it, you will see it in time. If you miss it, there is a U-turn option at the next exit. Do not try to navigate through the town of KwaDukuza to reach Zinkwazi from the south. Stay on the N2 and use the correct exit.

After the exit, follow the road into the village. Google Maps is reliable for the final approach. Browse self-catering stays at Zinkwazi Beach once you have the route sorted. The getting to Zinkwazi guide covers the full approach from King Shaka and Durban.

    Driving tips

    • Leave Johannesburg before 6am on a Friday to avoid the worst of the outbound traffic
    • Avoid arriving at Durban between 4pm and 7pm on a weekday. The N2 North Coast corridor gets congested
    • Set Google Maps to avoid tolls if you want an estimate of toll costs before departure. The N3 has multiple plazas
    • The N3 is a good quality highway throughout and does not require 4x4 capability at any point
    • The full road from Johannesburg to Zinkwazi is tarred
