Umhlanga is approximately 50 minutes south of Zinkwazi Beach, KwaZulu-Natal on the N2. It is the go-to day trip when you want something with a different energy entirely: good restaurants, proper shopping, the lighthouse promenade walk and the kind of urbane beach scene that Zinkwazi deliberately is not. Most people who have been at Zinkwazi for four or five days and want a change of pace end up here.
The promenade and lighthouse walk
The Umhlanga promenade runs along the beachfront from the main beach area north toward the Umhlanga rocks and the iconic red-and-white lighthouse. The walk is flat, paved and takes about 20 to 30 minutes at a relaxed pace. The lighthouse sits on a rocky headland above the surf and is the most photographed spot in Umhlanga. The beach below the promenade is clean, has shark nets and lifeguards, and is significantly more built-up than Zinkwazi. That is the point of coming: a deliberately different experience.
The promenade is busiest on weekends and during school holidays. Come midweek for a quieter walk.
Restaurants and eating out
Umhlanga has the most concentrated restaurant selection on the KZN North Coast. The beachfront strip and the surrounding streets offer everything from casual seafood to proper sit-down restaurants with views. The area around Chartwell Drive and the beach strip is the main dining hub.
A few worth knowing about. The Oyster Box Hotel on the beachfront is the landmark dining option. The hotel terrace overlooks the lighthouse and the ocean, and the curry buffet has been a fixture for decades. Cafe Fish on the promenade serves reliable seafood. For something more casual, the strip of restaurants along Lagoon Drive provides options at various price points.
Booking is advisable for any sit-down restaurant on a weekend. Midweek is generally walk-in friendly.
Gateway Theatre of Shopping
Gateway is one of the largest shopping malls in the southern hemisphere and sits approximately 3km inland from the Umhlanga beachfront. For visitors who need something specific (a particular store, clothing, electronics, a pharmacy with a full range) Gateway covers it. The mall has major anchor tenants including Woolworths, Clicks, Edgars, Checkers and a cinema.
Gateway also has a wave pool and outdoor activity area that makes it useful if you have children who need something structured for part of the day. The mall is large enough that you should plan which section you need before arriving or you will spend the first 20 minutes orienting yourself.
Umhlanga beach
The main Umhlanga beach is directly below the promenade, accessible by steps from the beachfront walk. It is a proper swimming beach with shark nets, lifeguards and changing facilities. The beach is narrower than Zinkwazi and considerably more built-up, with high-rise hotels and apartments forming the backdrop. The water is the same warm Indian Ocean.
It is worth an hour if you want to swim in a different setting, but it is not why most people make the trip. The promenade walk and the restaurants are the draw.
Getting there from Zinkwazi
Take the N2 south from Zinkwazi toward Durban. Umhlanga is approximately 50 minutes by car, depending on traffic. The La Lucia Ridge and Umhlanga offramps are both well signed from the N2. Google Maps is reliable for the full route and for finding parking near the beachfront.
Traffic heading south toward Durban can be heavy on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. Midweek or early on a Saturday works best.
"Umhlanga is where you go when Zinkwazi has given you everything it has and you want to remember what a city beach feels like. One day is exactly right."
If you are still deciding between coastal destinations, Zinkwazi vs Ballito covers the comparison.
